Initial Lactation Consultation 

  • Listening to your birth story and the problems you are having with breastfeeding
  • Medical history of Mother and Baby
  • Examination and assessment of Mother's breasts and nipples
  • Examination and assessment of Baby's oral anatomy, muscle tone, suck function, energy level
  • Weight checks before and after the feeding to assess how much milk your baby is drinking (milk transfer)
  • Observation and assessment of the entire feeding
  • Demonstration of ways to improve your baby's feeding/sucking ability when necessary
  • Alternative feeding methods, if necessay, taught with return demonstration
  • Set-up and rental of hosptial-grade pump, if needed
  • Identification of how much milk your baby needs
  • Plan of care discussed and written
  • Handouts given
  • Resources identified
  • Supplies, as needed to resolve breastfeeding issues
  • Follow-up visit scheduled
