Initial Lactation Consultation
- Listening to your birth story and the problems you are having with breastfeeding
- Medical history of Mother and Baby
- Examination and assessment of Mother's breasts and nipples
- Examination and assessment of Baby's oral anatomy, muscle tone, suck function, energy level
- Weight checks before and after the feeding to assess how much milk your baby is drinking (milk transfer)
- Observation and assessment of the entire feeding
- Demonstration of ways to improve your baby's feeding/sucking ability when necessary
- Alternative feeding methods, if necessay, taught with return demonstration
- Set-up and rental of hosptial-grade pump, if needed
- Identification of how much milk your baby needs
- Plan of care discussed and written
- Handouts given
- Resources identified
- Supplies, as needed to resolve breastfeeding issues
- Follow-up visit scheduled
